Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America

In the wake of yet another set of police killings of black men, Michael Eric Dyson wrote a tell-it-straight, no-holds-barred piece for the NYT on Sunday, July 7: "Death in Black and White" (it was updated within a day to acknowledge the killing of police officers in Dallas). The response has been overwhelming. Beyoncé and Isabel Wilkerson tweeted it; JJ Abrams, among many other prominent people, wrote him a long fan letter. The NYT closed the comments section after 2,500 responses, and Dyson has been on NPR, BBC, and CNN nonstop since then.

Fifty years ago Malcolm X told a white woman who asked what she could do for the cause, "Nothing." Dyson believes he was wrong. In Tears We Cannot Stop, he responds to that question. If we are to make real racial progress, we must face difficult truths, including being honest about how black grievance has been ignored, dismissed, or discounted. As Dyson writes, "At birth you are given a pair of binoculars that see black life from a distance, never with the texture of intimacy. Those binoculars are privilege; they are status, regardless of your class. In fact the greatest privilege that exists is for white folk to get stopped by a cop and not end up dead.... The problem is you do not want to know anything different from what you think you know.... You think we have been handed everything because we fought your selfish insistence that the world, all of it - all its resources, all its riches, all its bounty, all its grace - should be yours first and foremost, and if there's anything left, why then we can have some, but only if we ask politely and behave gratefully."

In the tradition of The Fire Next Time (Baldwin), short, emotional, literary, powerful, this is the book that all Americans who care about the current and long-burning crisis in race relations need to hear.

The racism in our USA is so pervasive -- certainly not limited to the South. As an 81 year old Irish Catholic, I believe Dr. Dyson's book is a must read!! Our Church is not a shinning light in this area. Our Bishop even forbade students in several Catholic High School from taking a knee to remind us the extent to which African-Americans continue to confront so much pain. No wonder so many have high blood pressure -- the overt racism, or even the perception of it, has such an impact on the physiology.

Thank you, sir, for this book. It has placed me on a new, correct path to understanding. I intend to read many of the suggested titles you shared at the end. America, please read without malice and prejudice. This is accurate and imperative for our healing and advancement.

I really enjoyed this book, would definitely recommend it. Politically I'm not on the same wavelength as the author, and maybe because of that parts of the book were puzzling to me. Still, there's a lot in it which did resonate, and I can much better understand his point of view. I found his writing style to be highly engaging, and full of memorable anecdotes of things he's seen and experienced first hand. I hope we can improve the situations he describes and live out the Closing Prayer he wrote to conclude the book. Maybe we can't fix everything, but I'm certain we can do better.

One of the best, most powerful books I have ever read! This should be read by every book club AND in schools. Although very well written, it is not a quick read but you will remember this forever. Thank you Michael Eric Dyson!

Really Good read, on what its like being Black in America. I really enjoyed this book, and learning about Michael Dyson past experiences. The book will have you view race from a different perspective. Mike, Talked about the Police, the racism with his bank, and offered solutions to people towards the end of the book.Great read

In the current climate it seems we are more polarized than ever. This area of race in America strikes at the heart of who we are. While Dyson writes well and has put together an interesting style for this book I couldn't tell who the book was for. If you believe there is white privilege than to rehash a couple hundred years of slavery is repetitive and if you believe white privilege is nonsense than you won't read this book. As a white male I do believe many if not all the benefits I have come from growing up in a white middle class. This doesn't mean I don't take exception to much of the rhetoric out there but I want to be given help to overcome my bias' and to be given tools to help make society a better place. Except for 5% of the book I was given another lecture on how terrible I am as a white male. After a while it gets old and you tune out. Help me be better. Give me tools to grow with, don't keep beating me over the head with the same stories of racism. I was hoping for a guide and all I got was a lecture.

Beautifully written, this book should be required reading for all. I taught Ethnic and Racial Studies at the University level and this would have been the perfect text. It hits all the important concepts and gives personalized examples. In this time when there is so much hate and racial unrest, I wish it was required reading for everyone.

Michael Eric Dyson’s profound sermon to white Americans about the inequity of the black experience is one that is an instant classic. Brother Dyson takes us down a road less traveled to explore the root cause of social injustice in our country and holds the mirror up to the “white experience” to show them how their action (or lack there of) contribute to our loathing for them in certain spaces and the racial inequality rampant in America today. To quote the good brother Donald Glover, “This is America”.
